Double Bass Size Guide

If you are buying a Double Bass from Duet Shop for either yourself or your child, you will want to make sure you choose the right size. To help, we have put together a simple guide.

Teacher Recommendation:

The first step when finding out which size double bass, you will need is to check with a music teacher. Most of the time, a teacher will measure the pupil and note which double bass size is required. You should always go with the size recommended by the teacher. However, if you do not have a teacher-recommended size read on to find out how to get the size yourself.

Age:

Whilst there will be some exceptions to the rule, age is generally a great indicator of the size of the double bass required by the player. In the table below, you will find the double bass size recommended for the player’s age. However, to ensure you get the best size double bass, we recommend measuring the player’s height.

Height:

Measuring the player’s height is a simple way of determining which size double bass you need.

Measure the height of the player while standing upright with good posture. Once you have the measurement consult the table below to find out which size double bass to get.

HEIGHTDouble Bass SIZEAGE OF PLAYER
3’6″ and under1/165 and under
3’6″-4′1/85-7
4′-4’6″1/47-9
4’6″-5′1/29-13
5’+3/413+/Average Sized Adult
5’9″+4/4 (Full Size)Larger Adult

It is worth noting that even at full height, most adults play a 3/4 double bass as standard. However, a 4/4 (full size) is available and is chosen by several players due to the sound difference between the two. It is best to choose the double bass that you are most likely to be comfortable playing.
